Like A Virgin

The Motown-influenced Like A Virgin goes down in history as one of the most important singles. It established Madonna as the first superstar, a woman in control, real evidence of feminism. Soon, many divas would follow Madonna's lead. Like A Virgin was bold, shiny and new. In the US, it peaked at the summit of the singles chart for six weeks, through the Christmas of 1984 to early 1985. The symbolism caused controversy, but like many of Madonna's greatest singles, this controversy only benefited her sales. Like A Virgin is a prime example of this. A video accompanied the single, with Madonna in Venice, dancing on a boat and wearing a mock wedding gown. With this, Like A Virgin is one of the most memorable pop tunes of the 80's.
