ALANIS - NEVER THERE

This week was supposed to be the week Alanis Morissette's "Thank U" single would bow on the chart, following its radio premiere. However, one of the most anticipated releases this year turned out to be a song that I just couldn't stand listening to. Therefore, due to the lack of personal points, it has not debuted on the chart and probably never will. An impressive Top 20 debut, though, comes from Cake's "Never There", which ironically arrives on the chart with the biggest noise. The single is one of the most interesting records of the year. Next week, we will see debuts come from Lenny Kravitz's "Fly Away", PJ Harvey's "A Perfect Day Elise" and hopefully, Goo Goo Dolls' "Slide", if I do get a secure copy of it. If I do, it will definitely be the biggest debut of the week.

THE POWER OF THE VIDEO

With heavy video airplay for Madonna's "The Power Of Goodbye", her single zooms up 23-17, after many weeks of consecutive gains. The boost this week came mostly from popular points, as the video makes splashy debuts on MTV and VH1. On MTV, it is the 17th most played video on its debut week while on VH1, it is the 11th most played video. The clip is beautiful, directed by Matthew Rolston, who was also responsible for other great videos such as Garbage's "I Think I'm Paranoid", Natalie Imbruglia's "Wishing I Was There" and the Foo Fighters' "Walking After You". All of these were big hits on the chart. It is very likely Madonna will follow.

GOLD

The #1 hit, Fuel's "Shimmer", goes gold this week. It is one of only 4 singles that have spent more than one week on top. Ironically, "Shimmer" only spent three weeks total in the Top 10 but has racked up many points in its lengthy stay in the Top 20. Meanwhile, their latest hit, "Bittersweet", has debuted at #39 and shall see further growth in the future, as the track is gaining ground on alternative radio.
