CHART UPDATE
Kiss' "Psycho Circus" hangs on to #1 for a second consecutive week but it looks like its reign is coming to end (I always say that so I could be wrong). If it doesn't run out of steam, it can hang on for a couple more weeks. But Lenny Kravitz's "Fly Away" moves up to #2, inching its way ever closer to the top spot. It is the #1 most played song on alternative and hard rock radio, the first time a track has done this simulatenously since 1996 when Smashing Pumpkins' "1979" was the #1 on alternative and rock radio. "Fly Away" is already #5 on popular points here, as the video enjoys a handsome gain in plays on MTV and airplay is no doubt growing on pop radio. Fuel's "Bittersweet" enjoys a second top 5 hit, moving 10-5 despite *losing* points and a bullet. If it can hang on, it may be a future #1. New entries in the Top 10 are The Offspring's "Pretty Fly" at #7 and Semisonic's "Singing In My Sleep" for the first time in the Top 10 in its 14 weeks on the chart. Looking for a spot in the Top 10 are Jewel's "Hands" and Black Sabbath's "Psycho Man", enjoying the biggest overall chart gains this week.
HALL OF FAME
With 6 new singles hitting the gold mark, there are now 28 songs which have achieved this feat. In the overall rankings, with "Iris" (Goo Goo Dolls) out of the way, Everclear's "Father Of Mine" is sure to be the #1 overall hit with Hole's "Celebrity Skin" very close behind. The chart is on its 21st week. In 5 weeks, we will have a midyear report. And when the chart is on its 52nd week, we will have the full year report.
ROCK SPOTLIGHT
As mentioned earlier, Lenny Kravitz's "Fly Away" has been setting new records. It spends week #3 at #1 on Mainstream Rock and his first on Modern Rock. "Fly Away" is his second #1 hit on mainstream and his first on modern. This hot single has also boosted sales of his album which has been steadily gaining sales each week for two months. The album 5 is certified gold. Metallica's "Turn The Page" debuts at #9, one of three top 10 debuts on the chart this year. It is their 5th Top 10 hit in the 1998 calendar year, following 4 Top 10 smashes from Reload. No other artist has had more than 3 top 10 hits this year.
GOLD & PLATINUM
PLATINUM -
Everclear - "Father Of Mine"
GOLD -
Korn - "Got The Life"
Rob Zombie - "Dragula"

The second single to go platinum on the chart, Everclear are still in the Top 10 and look to hold the biggest chart hit this year, which is of course, "Father Of Mine". 6 other singles go gold, mostly old singles on their way down. Only Rob Zombie's "Dragula" seems like it's going somewhere, moving 14-13, peaking at #5 a couple of weeks back. Look for Hole's "Celebrity Skin" to be certified platinum within the next 2 weeks.
