CHART UPDATE
In only its second chart week, Metallica's "Turn The Page" moves from #5 to #1. Only one other title has had the same speedy ascent to the top. That is Hole's "Celebrity Skin" which moved from #6 to #1 on its second week, eventually spending 3 weeks at #1 and has racked up a total of 13 consecutive weeks in the Top 10. It is also the song with the most points in the hall of fame. "Page" surpasses the peak of "Better Than You", Metallica's previous single. This title peaked at #34 on September 26, 1998. But "Page"'s chances for a long reign at the top, similar to the previous 2 #1 hits (What's This Life For, Psycho Circus), are limited. The Black Crowes' "Kickin' My Heart Around" has, for the first time in chart history, achieved Most Improved status for two consecutive weeks, making leaps from #31 to #13 and this week, landing at #4. It is an awesome upbeat soul-influenced rock track and definitely stands out among the rest. It should hit #1 soon enough. In other top 10 news, Candlebox's "10,000 Horses", the amazing followup to the #4 smash "It's Alright", hits #9 this week, giving them their second Top 10 hit from Happy Pills, their third set. Returning with their 4th overall chart entry are Pearl Jam with their live version of "Elderly Woman Behind A Counter In A Small Town", shortened to "Elderly Woman" on the chart. It is their first release from Live On Two Legs, their latest live set. Their previous singles, "Wishlist", "In Hiding" and "Do The Evolution", peaked at #26, #6 and #36 respectively. "Elderly" opens at #27 earning Smashing Debut honors.
HALL OF FAME
Everclear's "Father Of Mine" holds on at #1 for a third week but it's only 8 points ahead of the #2 title, Hole's "Celebrity Skin", which is still in the Top 10 racking up lots of points. "Father" is already down to #36. In two weeks, we will compile a Christmas half year listing of the Top singles and artists based on this chart. And I'll have lots of time during Christmas. I'll make it nice. Watch out for that.
ROCK SPOTLIGHT
There is basically no chart movement as airplay has been very stable on hard rock and alternative radio. On Mainstream Rock, Metallica hangs on to #1 for a third week while the only movement is Rob Zombie's "Dragula" and Hole's "Celebrity Skin" exchanging spots at #6 and #7. On Modern, U2's "Sweetest Thing" manages to hit #10 and it looks to be its peak. The only major movement is Everlast's "What It's Like", hitting #3 on alternative and moving up from #21 to #14 on mainstream rock with "airpower" status. It's becoming a huge all around rock hit.
