1. Monster Magnet "Temple Of Your Dreams"
SURE SHOTS TIP LIST
Bubbling under the 50. Most likely to make a chart impact.
Although the two preceding Monster Magnet singles never cracked Top 5, they were huge hits nonetheless and this one should follow its predecessors' success.
2. Sammy Hagar "Mas Tequila"
Former Van Halen frontman is back with more solo offerings.
3. Bad Company "Hey Hey"
A band that's just pure rock and roll, this one will be a huge hit.
4. Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies "Right Place Wrong Time"
Followup to "Boogie King".
1. Eminem "My Name Is"
SHOOT THE RADIO SHITLIST
Overplayed, overrated, overhyped. Least likely to make chart impact.
1 week at #1. Never have I passionately hated this song as much as Lullaby. Die Radio Die Radio. Why the hell does this get played? It's not even got a hook and it's soooo fuckin' repetitive.
2. Mariah Carey "I Still Believe"
2 weeks at #1. I don't think any of those guys in the video even care that she's singing.
3. Britney Spears "Baby One More Time"
2 weeks at #1. Go back to school, Mouseketeer.
4. Beastie Boys "Body Movin'"
It's a pity that lack of talent sells so much.
5. Shawn Mullins "Lullaby"
13 weeks at #1. Same as #4, but in this case radio airplay.
NUMBER ONE
Collective Soul's "Heavy" breaks records. It's the first time the #1 single is also #1 on Personal and Popular points as well as the Mainstream Rock charts. It's a great song and it's our #1 for the 4th week running. But we've got some major competitors ready to knock "Heavy" off of #1. Just look at major gainers and current chart champions, The Black Crowes and Candlebox. The Crowes' hold the longest running #1 in chart history, "Kickin' My Heart Around" which is STILL #2 for 4 weeks running after dropping off of #1. Will it ever go away? Well, their followup is "Only A Fool" and it's #6 and a ready to hit #1. What a great followup. But don't count out this week's Most Improved single which is "Happy Pills" from Candlebox moving up 19-10 and they are the first band to score three Top 10 hits. Previously, "10,000 Horses" peaked at #2 and "It's Alright" hit #4.
NEW ENTRIES
This week's Smashing Debut is Tom Petty's "Free Girl Now", an instant hit for the legend. It's a great acoustic track which has got an edge and a strong hook. Amazing. It enters at #20 and it should be in the Top 10 soon enough. Further down the chart, Neve and Silverchair make their debut appearances and Fear Factory coming in at #49.
THE LONGEVITY CHECK
A record is set this week as Goo Goo Dolls' "Slide" spends week 20 inside the Top 10. It's the longest running Top 10 single. The longest running chart single right now though is Hole's "Celebrity Skin", still going on its 26th chart week. That's half a year for the biggest chart single so far.
GOLD & PLATINUM
PLATINUM -
Metallica - "Turn The Page"
GOLD -
Our huge point loser for the week has the consolation of going platinum.
ROCK SPOTLIGHT
Tom Petty makes a huge chart debut at #5, with nearly every rock station in America playing the track. Same goes for Sammy Hagar's "Mas Tequila", which is another instant hit. Radio isn't as kind to new singles from Bon Jovi or Blur though. Oh well... Bad Company's "Hey Hey" is also doing very well in terms of radio support and of course, The Black Crowes' "Only A Fool" is now a huge smash hit.
