1. Def Leppard "Paper Sun"
SURE SHOTS TIP LIST
Bubbling under the 50. Most likely to make a chart impact.
Watch for this to make one of the splashy debuts on next week's chart. Airplay is growing. A great dark song.
2. Pound "Upside Down"
Another forthcoming splashy debut. This is a great track, with energy and a hook that will get you instantly.
3. Simon Says "Slider"
Making solid gains on active, #1 bubbling under, should enter on the main chart soon.
4. New American Shame "Under It All"
I've heard many great things about this AC/DC-influenced band and its first single.
1. TLC "No Scrubs"
SHOOT THE RADIO SHITLIST
Overplayed, overrated, overhyped. Least likely to make chart impact.
2 weeks at #1. I don't want no TLC's, a TLC is an irritating R&B version of the Spice Girls, Don't close the door on the passenger side, we'll throw them out on the highway one by one.
2. Ricky Martin "Livin' La Vida Loca"
Please go away, Ricky Martin.
3. Alanis Morissette "Unsent"
4 weeks at #1.
4. Backstreet Boys "I Want It That Way"
Crap, when will they stop recording?.
5. Sugar Ray "Every Morning"
NUMBER ONE
Finally, a new number one. And it was inevitable this week as Sammy Hagar drops all the way to #4, not only with the rapid disappearance of popular points (down to #9 from #5 this week) but even more, on personal points (#1 to #4). The new #1 of course is Buckcherry's "Lit Up", a single that spent months at #2 waiting for its chance. And finally, it becomes one of the only singles to achieve #1 on both popular and personal points, with a strong takeover of the #1 spot. This reign may be shortlived however, as "Lit Up" has had a long run inside the Top 3, surpassing the 200 point mark on some of those weeks. A fresh new single ascends to #2, Def Leppard's new one, "Promises", which is this week's Most Improved, with an increase of over 70 points, amazing. The single has also zoomed up to #5 from #18 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart. This will, most likely, take over the top spot in upcoming weeks.
NEW ENTRIES
Not many new entries, except a #22 debut from Alice In Chains making the most noise. The new single, "Get Born Again", is from their box set and it's a dark typical AIC-sounding track. Good stuff. Other new entries come from the 3rd singles from Offspring and Eve 6 further down the chart.
THE LONGEVITY CHECK
The Black Crowes' "Kickin' My Heart Around" is #23 on its 29th week.
GOLD & PLATINUM
PLATINUM -
Jonny Lang - "Still Rainin'"
Metallica - "Whiskey In The Jar"
GOLD -
Loudmouth - "Fly"
Metallica score their second platinum single.
ROCK SPOTLIGHT
The new Alice In Chains has a great opening week, but nothing like that of Def Leppard or the Chili Peppers. Def Leppard, with a full week of radio airplay, is already Top 5 in airplay. The Chili Peppers are Top 10. We'll see if AIC can pull it off.
