SURE SHOTS TIP LIST
Bubbling under the 50. Most likely to make a chart impact.
1. Vertical Horizon "We Are"
This track is sizzling, it reminds me a lot of R.E.M., watch for a debut in upcoming weeks.
2. Jonny Lang "Second Guessing"
The new Jonny Lang is very uptempo, more so than "Wander This World", should be a hit like "Still Rainin'".
3. Tonic "You Wanted More"
It sounds great, should be a potential Top 10 hit.
4. Powerman 5000 "When Worlds Collide"
I like the vibe of this one, sort of like Rob Zombie.

SHOOT THE RADIO SHITLIST
Overplayed, overrated, overhyped. Least likely to make chart impact.
1. Limp Bizkit "Nookie"
1 week at #1. I gave this one ten or so listens before I'd pass a verdict, same as the first listen: it's hip hop. I can handle Kid Rock, but Limp Bizkit's latest? No way. And the fact that it is getting so damn overplayed, I truly want to shoot the radio.
2. Britney Spears "Sometimes"
1 week at #1. Nowhere near as annoying as "Nookie", but still stupid and she really needs a brain transplant.
3. TLC "No Scrubs"
2 weeks at #1. That rapper girl is the most annoying, I have decided. How old is she, anyways? Does Mommy know she's whoring herself to record companies? Tsk tsk.
4. Backstreet Boys "I Want It That Way"
Their crap, together with Ricky Martin's, have prevented the first decent album to debut at #1. Check Billboard, you'll see.
5. Whitney Houston "It's Not Right, But It's Okay"
I actually like this, it's funny. I'd like to see a better video for this: Whitney being beaten up by her husband and singing, "It's not right.. But it's okay.."

NUMBER ONE

Yes, the coolest song to come out in many months. I haven't been excited by a song in a long time and finally it's achieved pole position. Def Leppard makes an amazing comeback at #1. It is also the same week that "Promises" ascends to #1 on Billboard's Rock chart, FMQB's rock chart, holds on to the top spot on Radio & Records' Rock chart and zooms up to #9 on R&R's Active Rock chart. A true bona fide smash, and well deserved. Watch for a long reign on top of Doc Rawk's 50, unless a hotter single comes along. Meanwhile, the only real competition is Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Scar Tissue", which is this week's Most Improved, for the second consecutive week. The album's sales open at #3 this week, which should spark some further increased airplay.

NEW ENTRIES

The latest from Sammy Hagar opens at #35. "Shag" is getting some extra exposure from its Austin Powers references. It's also a great song with a lot of cool riffs, very upbeat and could just land in the Top 10, depending on its popular points. Another debut comes along from Goo Goo Dolls, with their fourth chart single. "Black Balloon" is set to become a huge pop hit, rock, I don't know. I don't like the fact that they seem to be more focused on pop. But it's still a good song. It opens at #39.

THE LONGEVITY CHECK

The Black Crowes' "Kickin' My Heart Around" is #37 on its 31st week. It breaks the record for longest chart run. Meanwhile, Godsmack's "Whatever" is higher in rank, at #27, on its 30th week.

GOLD & PLATINUM

PLATINUM -
Sammy Hagar - "Mas Tequila"
Buckcherry - "Lit Up"
Rob Zombie - "Living Dead Girl"

GOLD -

Rob Zombie scores his second platinum single.

ROCK SPOTLIGHT

Lenny Kravitz's "American Woman", featured in the Austin Powers movie, experiences major airplay gains, and this should continue in upcoming weeks. There is also a radio edit of the track without the distortion of his voice in the end, infinitely better. Too bad I don't have the promo single.
