1. Great White "Rollin' Stoned"
SURE SHOTS TIP LIST
Bubbling under the 50. Most likely to make a chart impact.
This great track has been servied to radio with #1 most added status. Watch for a decent debut next week.
2. Dokken "Maddest Hatter"
Following the Scorps, Great White and Def Leppard, Dokken is also making a good comeback with a great energy single.
3. Tonic "You Wanted More"
Watch for a good debut this week.
4. Drain STH "Enter My Mind"
A real grower with a hook that grabs you more each time.
5. Megadeth "Crush Em"
Megadeth's latest is a breath of fresh rock, totally rocking and full of infectious riffs. A potential NUMBER ONE, watch for a great debut this week.
1. Limp Bizkit "Nookie"
SHOOT THE RADIO SHITLIST
Overplayed, overrated, overhyped. Least likely to make chart impact.
2 weeks at #1. I would bitch this week about this crap getting big but there's a lot of good stuff doing better than "Nookie" so what the hell. Still doesn't mean it's not the ultimate in suckiness.
2. Backstreet Boys "I Want It That Way"
Do they have ANY male fans? Though, if you happen to be a male BSB fan, DO NOT contact me.
3. Britney Spears "Sometimes"
1 week at #1. This spot should be reserved for MTV instead and their refusal to stop playing this crap and the lack of rock on their playlist, they must die.
4. Shania Twain "That Don't Impress Me Much"
I'm usually not into accusing artists of selling out, and I won't do that for Shania, her "music" says it all.
5. Will Smith "Wild Wild West"
He's done it again. Made a song 10 times as annoying as his previous. He truly needs to be shot.
NUMBER ONE
Looks like Def Lep is setting "Promises" for a long run at #1, retaining its bullet and its points remain above the 200 mark, a rare feat. In fact, it stands at 210 points this week, perhaps one of the biggest chart weeks. I haven't checked, can't say. But it's huge. Second week and counting. The only real competition comes from Red Hot Chili Peppers, who continue their speedy ascent, now landing at #3. The same goes for Pearl Jam's "Last Kiss", at #5 this week, surpassing the high of its previous Top 10 single, "In Hiding", which hit #6 in 1998. "Last Kiss" hit #2 on Billboard's Pop chart, amazing feat and definitely well deserved. Great band, and there really needs to be more rock songs in the Top 10 pop charts.
NEW ENTRIES
The Smashing Debut is very noteworthy for a couple of reasons. Although Susan Tedeschi's "Rock Me Right" opens at a decent but not incredible #31, it ends the dry spell of female acts on the chart. For many weeks since Hole's "Malibu" (a former #2) left the chart, no female acts have graced the chart. Which meant every week since, the 50 chart songs were by male fronted bands or male artists. Now, Susan Tedeschi, a great blues artist with the most amazing voice (you have to hear her) looks to break some more hits along the way. In fact, she has already surpassed the peak of her previous single. "It Hurt So Bad" managed to sneak in the chart at #50 a couple of months back. Other debuts come from Scorpions, who open at #37. Their latest track is one in the series of 80's bands returning into the spotlight. Look for singles from Great White and Dokken to debut next week. Scorps have released a great song though, worthy of all the attention surrounding it. Another debut comes from Santana featuring Rob Thomas from Matchbox 20 on vocals. The track is great and has a cool vibe going. Rob Thomas' voice also succeeds with Carlos, it's not annoying and whiny like in his Matchbox 20 stuff. Finally, a #49 debut comes from Static-X, a particularly weak track in my opinion. It probably won't do as well on the chart.
THE LONGEVITY CHECK
The Black Crowes' "Kickin' My Heart Around" is #46 on its 32nd week. It is the longest running song in the history of the chart but it may drop out next week. Meanwhile, Godsmack's "Whatever" is higher in rank, at #29, on its 31st week. Look for "Whatever" to break this longevity record.

ROCK SPOTLIGHT
80's bands are making noise: Great White, Dokken, The Scorpions, Styx and The Pretenders are back with new singles which are being played significantly. Meanwhile, Megadeth, ever present in the rock scene, is back with a new album and should making a lot of noise, possibly benefitting from this embrace of retro rock in recent weeks.
